A month or so ago I blogged about my Uncle Chris, and then yesterday I shared synchronized ATV’s that occurred during my Grand-Dad’s 80th birthday party. For this week’s Camo Friday I wanted to incorporate how both of those posts are related.
Originally when Grand-Dad’s party was planned, it was supposed to be a surprise. It was set for the same weekend as the 2012 International Fall Grand, which all the South Carolina family would be coming into Oklahoma to watch Uncle Chris and Crude compete. It was the perfect plan in order for our family to all be in town, and for Grand-Dad not to suspect we would be throwing him a party.
Unfortunately, due to circumstances out of all of our control, our South Carolina family was unable to make it to Oklahoma for the party, and for the Grand.
Because I’m not-so-secretly extremely sentimental, and very big into symbolism, I wanted to do something to represent both, our family who was not able to make it to the party, and to help show our support for Crude, while he competed at the Grand.

That idea was Camo Cupcakes.
I found the recipe on Pinterest (The source of all domestic goodness) and decided to give it a whirl. The blogger whom the pin originated from used pictures to show each step, and I was surprised how simple the cupcakes were to make. I also used her recipe for homemade icing, which I recommend, since it received rave reviews.

My advice after making this is to use two white cake mixes, one chocolate mix. Since you have to use so much of the white to make the other colors it runs out quickly and you end up with many plain chocolate cupcakes. After evaluating my situation, I think an additional white mix would even out all the camo colors.
Also, double the icing recipe. I didn’t, and started running low early in the icing game. Since it was like 1 a.m. when I was doing this, because I was out of supplies, and because I try to avoid Walmart like the plague… I was stingy with the icing in order to make it work. Learn from my mistakes, double it.
And Ta-da! Here they are…

I wish I had a better picture, but in my sleep deprived state I didn’t think to pull out the camera. So this photo comes to you via my iPhone, and edited by Instagram. Whoops!
Happy Friday y’all!
